Does Uber and Lyft Have Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles?


Uber and Lyft are ride services for people in need of one whenever and wherever you are by people inside your own city! The trick is when you have a wheelchair or disability to finding a ride with the capabilities to accommodate a wheelchair, scooter or other mobility device. Read below on how Uber and Lyft are helping close the gap between able-bodied and disabled riders.

Uber uses technology to make their rides more accessible and of course reliable for customers with disabilities. They are piloting several models to help with wheelchair accessible vehicles in various cities including New York, Houston, Chicago, London, and Portland. This involves making sure the technology is available to drivers with wheelchair accessible vehicles and partnering with commercial providers.

The other pilot programs are called uberWAV and uberASSIST. Both are voluntary and provide informational materials to driver-partners on how to assist riders into vehicles and accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers and scooters.

Accessible Vehicle Dispatch | Accessibility Settings in the App

The Lyft app allows passengers with accessibility needs to enable Access Mode. In certain markets, when Access Mode is enabled, vehicles that are specially outfitted to accommodate wheelchairs will be dispatched in lieu of a standard Lyft vehicle. In markets where those vehicles are not available, information regarding local services will be sent directly to the passenger via text message when the ride is requested.

Many of the below accessible vehicle dispatches must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. In order to utilize their service, you may want to consider first reaching out to the local dispatch to inquire about their sign up process. Depending on the vendor, it may take several weeks to complete the enrollment process before being able to book a ride in their respective cities.
